Battle context

The Battle of Zaoyang–Yichang, also known as the Battle of Zaoyi, was one of 22 major engagements between the National Revolutionary Army and the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The battle involved Republic of China forces under Li Zongren and Zhang Zizhong facing Imperial Japanese forces under Waichiro Sonobe. Chinese casualties significantly exceeded Japanese losses, with Republic of China forces suffering 63,127 casualties against an Imperial Japanese figure of 25,941 — a disparity that reflected the attritional pressure China absorbed repeatedly across the broader conflict. The engagement stood as part of a sustained pattern of large-scale conventional fighting in which the National Revolutionary Army contested Japanese advances at considerable cost while seeking to deny territorial and strategic gains.
