Battle of Zadwórze

Battle context

The Battle of Zadwórze, fought near a railway station 33 kilometres from Lwów, lasted roughly 24 hours and ended in the complete destruction of the Polish force under Bolesław Zajączkowski. Despite that outcome, the engagement halted Semyon Budyonny's Soviet cavalry advance and prevented the seizure of Lwów. By fixing and delaying Budyonny's forces, the battle contributed to the broader defensive effort that culminated in the successful defence of Warsaw during the Polish–Soviet War. The action has been called a Polish Thermopylae, a comparison rooted in the destruction of the defenders alongside the strategic check imposed on the attacker. Of the 330 Soviet troops recorded as engaged, 318 became casualties, underscoring the intensity of resistance the Polish force mounted before being overrun.
