The Battle of Yu Oc was a French victory fought in the context of relieving the besieged garrison at Tuyên Quang, which was under pressure from Tang Jingsong's Yunnan Army and Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army during the Sino-French War. The engagement was part of the broader French effort to maintain their position in Tonkin against coordinated Chinese and Black Flag resistance. Colonel Jacques Duchesne commanded the French force at Yu Oc; he later gained wider recognition as the commander of the French expedition that conquered Madagascar in 1895.
