Battle of Yehuling

Overview

The Yehuling Campaign, including the Battle of Huihe River, the battles at Wild Fox Ridge, and the Battle of Badger Mouth, was fought between the Mongol Empire and the Jin dynasty in 1211, during the first stage of the Mongol conquest of the Jin dynasty. The battle took place in the northwest of present-day Wanquan District, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. It concluded with a Mongol victory, hastening the decline of the Jin dynasty.

Significance

The Yehuling Campaign of 1211 — encompassing the Battle of Huihe River, the battles at Wild Fox Ridge, and the Battle of Badger Mouth — was a major engagement in the first stage of the Mongol conquest of the Jin dynasty. Fought in the northwest of what is now Wanquan District, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, it pitted a Mongol force of 65,000 under Genghis Khan against a Jin army reported at 600,000. The campaign concluded with a Mongol victory and is recorded as hastening the decline of the Jin dynasty, marking it as one of the consequential early engagements of a conquest that would ultimately end Jin rule by 1234.
