Battle of Yatay

Battle context

The Battle of Yatay, fought near Paso de los Libres in the Argentine province of Corrientes, was a victory for the Triple Alliance over Paraguayan forces. The engagement resulted in the destruction of the entire Paraguayan force engaged: all 3,200 troops appear to have been killed, captured, or otherwise rendered combat-ineffective. Against an Allied force roughly three to four times its size, the Paraguayan contingent suffered total losses. The battle was part of the broader campaign to expel Paraguayan troops from Argentine territory, a key early objective of the Alliance. By eliminating this Paraguayan force in Corrientes, the Alliance secured a significant operational success in the initial phase of the war.
