Battle of Worcester

Battle context

The Battle of Worcester, fought on 3 September 1651, was the last major battle of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, which had convulsed England, Scotland, and Ireland since 1638. A Parliamentarian army of around 28,000 under Oliver Cromwell defeated a largely Scottish Royalist force of 16,000 led by Charles II, inflicting approximately 3,000 Royalist casualties. The engagement effectively ended organized Royalist military resistance in the wars. With Charles II driven into exile following the defeat, Parliamentary and then Cromwellian authority over England was consolidated without a further serious armed challenge from the Stuart cause for nearly a decade. Worcester thus closed the military phase of a conflict that had transformed the constitutional and political landscape of the British Isles, sealing the failure of the Scottish-backed Royalist effort to restore Charles II to his thrones by force.
