The Battle of Werben was a significant defensive success for Sweden during the early phase of Gustavus Adolphus's intervention in the Thirty Years' War. Commanding a force of 15,100 against Tilly's 16,200 Imperial troops, Gustavus Adolphus held his entrenchments before Werben on the Elbe, inflicting casualties reported at 6,000 Imperialists while sustaining only 200 Swedish losses. The lopsided casualty ratio demonstrated the defensive strength of the Swedish position and checked Tilly's ability to dislodge the Swedish army from its foothold. At a moment when Sweden was consolidating its presence in northern Germany and seeking to assert itself as the leading Protestant military power, a successful defense against the Empire's principal field commander carried both strategic and political weight, helping to stabilize the Swedish operational position on the Elbe ahead of subsequent campaigning.
