Battle context

The Battle of Wana was a March 2004 engagement in South Waziristan in which approximately 7,000 Pakistani army troops and intelligence paramilitary soldiers confronted an estimated 500 al-Qaeda foreign fighters entrenched near the town of Wana. The operation targeted fortified settlements at Azam Warsak and resulted in 149 al-Qaeda casualties and 17 Pakistani soldiers killed. The battle represented one of the Pakistani military's significant early ground commitments against al-Qaeda-linked foreign fighters embedded in the tribal areas, a theater that would define the broader insurgency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa throughout the decade. The presence of senior al-Qaeda figures among the associated commanders underscored the strategic weight the organization placed on South Waziristan as a sanctuary.
