Battle context
The Battle of Wagram produced a costly but decisive French victory over the Austrian army under Archduke Charles, directly precipitating the breakup of the Fifth Coalition — the Austrian and British-led alliance against France. The engagement effectively ended Austria's ability to sustain the 1809 campaign, removing the principal continental partner from the coalition arrayed against Napoleon. Combined French and allied casualties exceeded 35,000 and Austrian losses approached 39,000, reflecting the scale and intensity of the fighting. At the time of the battle, Wagram was the largest battle in European history, a distinction that underscored both the mobilization capacity Napoleon had developed and the stakes Austria accepted in renewing war against France.
