Battle context

The Battle of Villers-Bocage, fought one week after the Normandy landings, was a British attempt to exploit a gap in the German defences west of Caen. The effort to push through this opening and extend the Allied foothold in Normandy failed: after one day of fighting in and around Villers-Bocage and a second day defending a position outside the town, the British force withdrew. The setback checked momentum west of Caen at an early and critical phase of the campaign to liberate German-occupied France, reinforcing the difficulty the Western Allies would face in breaking out from the Normandy beachhead.
