Battle of Villarrobledo

Overview

The Battle of Villarrobledo took place during the First Carlist War on September 20, 1836, south of Villarrobledo at a campground called Vega de San Cristóbal, which lies near a hermitage of the same name. However, there were also casualties reported in Villarrobledo proper. The battle was a major defeat for the Carlist general Miguel Gómez Damas, and his forces suffered large casualties, as well as the loss of large amounts of munitions. For his victory, Isidro de Alaix Fábregas was given the title of Viscount of Villarrobledo and was awarded the Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand.

Significance

The Battle of Villarrobledo on September 20, 1836 delivered a major defeat to the Carlist forces under Miguel Gómez Damas, inflicting casualties of between 200 and 500 men and costing the Carlists significant quantities of munitions. Fought at Vega de San Cristóbal near Villarrobledo during the First Carlist War, the engagement saw a Liberal force roughly two and a half times the size of its opponent press the advantage in numbers to decisive effect. The loss of materiel alongside the manpower cost compounded the setback for the Carlist cause in this theater. Liberal commander Isidro de Alaix Fábregas was recognized for the victory with the title of Viscount of Villarrobledo and the Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand, reflecting the military and political weight attached to the outcome.
