Battle context

The Battle of Venta del Pozo, fought on 23 October 1812, was a rear-guard action during the Peninsular War in which French forces under Boyer and Curto succeeded in dislodging the Anglo-German force commanded by Cotton and Wellington from a succession of defensive positions. The engagement resulted in a French tactical victory: despite the British repelling two assaults on the final piece of high ground they held, they ultimately withdrew to secure a safer position. British casualties of 250 exceeded French losses of 134, reflecting the cost of conducting a fighting withdrawal against a numerically larger force. As a rear-guard action, its significance lay in covering the broader movement of Allied forces rather than contesting ground permanently, but the French success in pressing through successive British defensive lines demonstrated the pressure Wellington's army faced during this phase of the campaign.
