Battle context
The Battle of Umbu was an engagement between the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and the Empire of Brazil during the Cisplatine War. The United Provinces force of 1,190, commanded by Lucio Norberto Mansilla, suffered 173 casualties before withdrawing from the field. Command on the Brazilian side fell to Bento Manuel Ribeiro. The Republican withdrawal represented a setback in the ongoing contest over the Banda Oriental, the disputed territory at the heart of the Cisplatine War.
