Battle of Uman

Battle context

The Battle of Uman resulted in the encirclement and destruction of the Soviet 6th and 12th Armies by Wehrmacht forces within approximately three weeks. With roughly 203,000 Soviet casualties against German losses of around 20,853, the engagement represented a severe disparity in attrition and eliminated two entire field armies from the Soviet order of battle in Ukraine. The operation, conducted under Army Group South with commanders including von Rundstedt, von Kleist, and von Stülpnagel on the German side, demonstrated the early German capacity to execute large-scale encirclement on the Eastern Front. The loss of these forces weakened Soviet defensive depth in Ukraine at a critical stage of the 1941 campaign, reducing the ability of commanders Budyonny, Kirponos, and Tyulenev to contest further German advances into the region.
