Battle of Ulm

Battle context

The Battle of Ulm concluded a campaign in which Napoleon trapped an entire Austrian army under Karl Mack von Leiberich and forced its surrender with minimal French losses. With an Austrian force of roughly 40,000 facing 80,000 French troops, the encirclement produced approximately 4,000 Austrian casualties against only 1,500 French, and delivered the whole army as a strategic prize. The capitulation removed a principal Austrian field force from the Napoleonic Wars at an early stage of the 1805 campaign, opening the road into the Austrian heartland and fundamentally altering the balance of forces before further operations could develop.
