Battle of Turbigo

Significance

The Battle of Turbigo on 3 June 1859 secured two crossing points over the Ticino River for French forces, establishing a foothold in Austrian Lombardy. By forcing the river crossing, the French under commanders including MacMahon and Camou opened a path deeper into Austrian-held territory, a critical operational step in the Second Italian War of Independence. Control of the crossings shifted the strategic initiative toward the Franco-Piedmontese alliance at an early stage of the Lombard campaign.
