The Battle of Tulagi and Gavutu–Tanambogo was a land battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, between the forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Allied ground forces. It took place 7–9 August 1942 on the Solomon Islands, during the initial Allied landings in the Guadalcanal campaign.

Significance

The Battle of Tulagi and Gavutu–Tanambogo was part of the initial Allied landings in the Guadalcanal campaign, fought on August 7–9, 1942, in the Solomon Islands. It represented one of the first major offensive ground operations by Allied forces against Japan in the Pacific. The engagement pitted approximately 7,500 U.S. troops against a Japanese garrison of around 1,500, drawn from Imperial Japanese Navy forces. The near-total destruction of the Japanese force at Tulagi and the twin islands of Gavutu and Tanambogo secured anchorage and position in the lower Solomons, complementing the concurrent landings on Guadalcanal and establishing a foothold that underpinned the broader Allied effort to contest Japanese expansion in the South Pacific.
