Battle context
The Battle of Trois-Rivières was part of the broader American invasion of Quebec that had begun in September 1775, aimed at removing the province from British control. A Continental force under Brigadier General William Thompson attempted to block a British advance up the Saint Lawrence River valley but was defeated by Quebec Governor Guy Carleton's army. The defeat, in which the Continental side suffered 200 casualties despite fielding a force twice the size of the British, marked a significant setback for American operations in Canada. It demonstrated the limits of the Continental Army's ability to sustain offensive operations in Quebec and contributed to the ultimate failure of the invasion to bring the province under colonial control.
