The Battle of Trincomalee was the fourth engagement between Hughes and Suffren in their sustained naval campaign along the Indian Ocean littoral during the broader Anglo-French War tied to the American Revolutionary War. The repeated clashes between these two fleets reflected the strategic contest for dominance over South Asian waters, where control of port facilities and sea lanes bore directly on European colonial holdings in the region.
