Battle context

The Battle of Tres de Abril took place in Cebu city on April 3, 1898, approximately one month after the Revolt of Cebu began. The engagement was part of the broader Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule and represented the continuation of Katipunan military operations in the Visayas region. With a Katipunan force of 5,000 fighters under commanders Leon Kilat, Arcadio Maxilom, and Jose Ignacio Paua facing Spanish forces under Fernando Primo de Rivera, the battle demonstrated the scale of revolutionary mobilization outside of the Manila-centered theater of the conflict. The engagement occurred in the final months of Spanish rule in the Philippines, as the revolution was entering its concluding phase before American intervention later that year.
