Battle of Toverud

Overview

The Battle of Toverud or the Battles of Rakkestad and Toverud were several skirmishes fought around Toverud in Aurskog and Rakkestad in Østfold, on 19 and 20 April 1808, as a part of the Dano-Swedish War of 1808-1809. Christian August sent a larger force to cut off and destroy the scattered Swedish detachments under Gustaf Olof Lagerbring. A small Swedish force, led by Oxenstierna, managed to break through the Norwegian lines, led by Heyerdahl, at Rakkestad. Another contingent, under Axel Otto Mörner, failed to break through the lines at Toverud, under Weibye, resulting in the capture of the Swedish force—except for 13 men who managed to escape to the main army at Haneborg.

Significance

The engagements at Rakkestad and Toverud on 19–20 April 1808 resulted in sharply divergent outcomes for the two Swedish detachments involved. Christian August's operation to envelop and destroy the scattered Swedish forces under Lagerbring achieved its principal objective at Toverud, where Mörner's contingent failed to break through Norwegian lines and was captured almost entirely, with only 13 men escaping to the main Swedish position at Haneborg. The simultaneous action at Rakkestad ended differently: a small Swedish force under Oxenstierna successfully broke through Heyerdahl's Norwegian lines. Together the skirmishes illustrate the vulnerability of dispersed Swedish detachments to coordinated Norwegian encirclement operations during the early phase of the Dano-Swedish War, and the near-total loss of Mörner's force represented a tangible reduction in Swedish operational strength in the Østfold sector.
