Significance

The Battle of Toski was fought between Anglo-Egyptian forces under Francis Grenfell and a Mahdist army under Wad el Nujumi in southern Egypt on August 3, 1889. The Mahdist force, numbering around 6,000, suffered approximately 1,200 casualties in the engagement. The battle represented a significant check on Mahdist expansion into Egyptian territory and demonstrated the capacity of Anglo-Egyptian arms to defend the frontier against incursion from Sudan during the broader Mahdist War.
