Battle of Tofrek

Overview

The Battle of Tofrek was fought on 22 March 1885 some 5 miles inland from the port of Suakin on the Red Sea coast of Sudan. A contingent of some 3,000 troops from the British and Indian "Suakin Field Force" led by Major General Sir John Carstairs McNeill was attacked by a Mahdist force under the leadership of Osman Digna. The Mahdists were heavily defeated, losing some 1,000 of their 2,000 fighters as compared to the loss of 70 British and Indian soldiers plus over 100 casualties.

Significance

The Battle of Tofrek was fought on 22 March 1885 approximately five miles inland from the port of Suakin on the Red Sea coast of Sudan. A British and Indian Suakin Field Force of some 3,000 troops under Major General Sir John Carstairs McNeill was attacked by a Mahdist force of around 2,000 fighters under Osman Digna. The Mahdists suffered roughly 1,000 killed — half their engaged strength — against British and Indian losses of 70 killed and over 100 casualties. The engagement demonstrated that British-led forces operating out of Suakin could repel Mahdist offensive action in the coastal hinterland even when attacked, inflicting disproportionate losses on Osman Digna's forces. Within the broader Mahdist War, the battle formed part of the British effort to secure the Suakin corridor during a period of heightened Mahdist pressure following the fall of Khartoum.
