Battle context

The Battle of Toba–Fushimi was a decisive early engagement of the Boshin War, pitting the Tokugawa shogunate's numerically superior force of 15,000 against approximately 5,000 allied troops from Chōshū, Satsuma, and Tosa Domains fighting under the Imperial banner. Despite initial setbacks at Fushimi—where Satsuma forces were routed—the pro-Imperial coalition held and ultimately defeated the shogunate over four days of fighting near Kyoto and along the Toba road toward Osaka. The shogunate's failure to convert its numerical advantage into victory marked a critical early reversal in the conflict, undermining the military credibility of the Tokugawa order at the outset of the war that would determine control of Japan.
