Battle of Tiruvannamalai

Significance

The Battle of Tiruvannamalai was one of two engagements identified as successful actions by the Madras Army in the Carnatic during the First Anglo-Mysore War, the other being the Battle of Chengam. Fought on 25 September 1767, it pitted allied East India Company forces under Colonel Smith against the troops of Hyder Ali of Mysore. Within the broader campaign in the Carnatic, these two victories represented notable counterweights to Hyder Ali's pressure on Company-held territory, though the wider war continued. The battle's recorded outcome stands as part of the limited British military successes during a conflict in which Hyder Ali otherwise posed a sustained and serious threat to Company interests in southern India.
