Battle context

The Battle of Tigranocerta, fought on 6 October 69 BC, was a decisive Roman victory in the Third Mithridatic War in which Consul Lucius Licinius Lucullus defeated Tigranes the Great despite commanding a force significantly smaller than the Armenian army — Roman strength was recorded between 11,000 and 40,000 against an Armenian force of 70,000 to 100,000. Armenian casualties reached approximately 10,000. The immediate strategic consequence was the capture of Tigranocerta, the Armenian capital, representing a major blow to Tigranes and his position in the wider conflict. Tigranes had entered the war as a powerful ally whose resources and territory had extended the reach of Roman operations well beyond the original theater against Mithridates of Pontus. The fall of his capital demonstrated Roman operational reach into Armenia itself and degraded the capacity of the Pontic-Armenian alliance to sustain resistance against Lucullus during this phase of the war.
