Battle context

The 1759 Battle of Ticonderoga formed part of the British campaign to seize French positions along the Lake Champlain corridor during the Seven Years' War. A British force of 11,376 under Jeffery Amherst confronted a French garrison of 1,900 under François-Charles de Bourlamaque, a disparity that reflected the broad British numerical superiority by this stage of the North American war. The engagement was a sequel to the costly British repulse at the same position in 1758, when Abercrombie's much larger force had failed to take the fort. The 1759 action was among several converging British offensives that steadily stripped France of its interior positions in North America during the war's later years.
