Battle of Thessalonica

Significance

The Battle of Thessalonica, fought in the summer or autumn of 380, marked a further setback for the Eastern Roman Empire in the Gothic War of 376–382. Theodosius I had worked to reconstitute the East Roman army following its catastrophic defeat at Adrianople, yet the rebuilt force suffered another major defeat against Fritigern's Goths. The consequences were immediate and strategically significant: Theodosius retreated to Thessalonica and relinquished operational control to the Western Emperor Gratian, effectively transferring the burden of the campaign to the western half of the empire. The battle demonstrated that Roman recovery after Adrianople remained incomplete and that Gothic forces under Fritigern retained the capacity to defeat Roman armies in the field even as the empire attempted to reassert itself in the Balkans.
