The Battle of the Vistula River, also known as the Battle of Warsaw and Ivangorod, was a major Russian victory on the Eastern Front in the opening phase of World War I. Despite fielding the larger force, the Russian Empire inflicted disproportionate casualties, with German Empire losses reaching over 78,000 against roughly 65,000 Russian casualties. The engagement checked the Central Powers' advance and affirmed Russian operational capacity on the Eastern Front at a critical early stage of the war, involving senior commanders on both sides including Hindenburg and Mackensen for Germany and Grand Duke Nicholas for Russia.
