The Battle of Tugela Heights, fought over two weeks in February 1900, ended the Siege of Ladysmith, one of the most strategically significant sieges of the Second Boer War. General Sir Redvers Buller's force of approximately 20,000 British troops compelled Louis Botha's roughly 5,000-strong Boer army to withdraw, relieving a garrison that had been under siege and whose fall would have represented a major blow to British prestige and operational position in Natal. The relief of Ladysmith marked a turning point in the early phase of the war, during which Boer forces had successfully besieged multiple British-held towns. British casualties of approximately 2,300 reflect the intensity of the fighting required to dislodge the defending Boer forces across the series of engagements that made up the battle.
