Battle context
The Battle of the Kerch Peninsula encompassed the Soviet Kerch-Feodosia Landing Operation and ended with the German Operation Bustard Hunt, pitting Manstein's 11th Army against the Soviet Crimean Front across the eastern Crimean Peninsula. The Soviet amphibious landings in December 1941 were intended to relieve the Siege of Sevastopol by forcing German forces to divert strength from that operation. Instead, Axis forces contained the beachhead through the winter, interdicting Soviet naval supply lines through aerial bombardment, while the Crimean Front's repeated offensive attempts from January through April all failed. The Red Army lost 352,000 men in those attacks against Axis casualties of 24,120, with superior German artillery firepower identified as a principal cause of the Soviet collapse. The scale of the Soviet defeat left Sevastopol without the relief it required and surrendered the initiative in Crimea to German forces, directly enabling Manstein to consolidate his position on the peninsula and continue offensive operations there.
