Battle context

The Battle of the Gediz was fought between Turkish Kuva-yi Milliye irregular forces and the Greek army near the Gediz River. The engagement served as a deliberate test by Turkish forces to determine whether irregular units could compete with the Greek army in a conventional open-field battle. The outcome demonstrated that the irregulars lacked the discipline and experience required to engage Greek forces effectively at scale. This finding carried direct consequences for the wider Greco-Turkish War: the Government of the Grand National Assembly concluded that a regular army was necessary to prosecute the campaign against Greece. The battle thus became a turning point in Turkish military organization, accelerating the transition from Kuva-yi Milliye irregular warfare toward the conventional force structure that would define the subsequent conduct of the war.
