The Battle of the Dunes, fought on 14 June 1658, was a major engagement of the Franco-Spanish War in which a Franco-English force under Turenne, François de Créquy, and William Lockhart faced a Spanish army of comparable size under John of Austria, Luis Carrillo, and Grand Condé. Spanish casualties of 6,000 against forces of roughly 14,000–15,000 on each side indicate a decisive French victory. The presence of Grand Condé on the Spanish side and James, Duke of York among Spanish commanders reflects the extent to which French domestic rivalries and English dynastic politics had become entangled in the broader Franco-Spanish conflict. The battle occurred in the final years of the war, which concluded with the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, and a defeat of this scale would have materially weakened the Spanish military position in the Low Countries in the closing phase of negotiations.
