The Battle of the Clearwater was a engagement in the Idaho Territory during the Nez Perce War of 1877, pitting General O. O. Howard's U.S. Army force of 400–450 soldiers against approximately 200 Nez Perce warriors under Chief Joseph, Looking Glass, and Toohoolhoolzote. Despite the army achieving initial surprise against the Nez Perce village, the Nez Perce launched a counter-attack that inflicted significant casualties on Howard's force. The tactical outcome was mixed: the Nez Perce demonstrated they could strike back effectively against a numerically superior enemy, yet were ultimately compelled to abandon their village. This forced withdrawal carried operational consequences, pushing the Nez Perce further from their homeland and contributing to the long retreat that defined the broader arc of the war.
