Battle context
The Battle of the Chesapeake, fought near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay on September 5, 1781, proved strategically decisive for the outcome of the American Revolutionary War. By preventing the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating Lord Cornwallis's besieged forces at Yorktown, the French fleet under the Comte de Grasse secured control of the sea lanes and denied Britain its only viable relief option. This naval success directly enabled the Franco-American army to receive siege artillery and French reinforcements, which proved decisive in the Siege of Yorktown. The fall of Yorktown that followed effectively secured independence for the Thirteen Colonies, making the Chesapeake engagement one of the most consequential naval actions of the war despite its inconclusive tactical result in terms of ships destroyed.
