Battle of the Caribbean

Significance

The Battle of the Caribbean was a naval campaign fought from 1941 to 1945 as a component of the broader Battle of the Atlantic. German U-boats and Italian submarines targeted Allied oil supplies and other materiel moving through the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, also striking coastal targets in the Antilles. The campaign directly threatened Allied logistics, as Caribbean oil was a critical resource for the war effort. Improved Allied anti-submarine warfare eventually forced Axis submarines out of the region, securing these supply lines and denying the Axis the sustained disruption they sought. The campaign's outcome contributed to Allied control of Atlantic sea lanes that underpinned operations across multiple theaters.
