Battle context

The Battle of Arcole formed the decisive engagement of the third Austrian attempt to relieve the siege of Mantua during the War of the First Coalition. Alvinczi's plan depended on a two-pronged offensive: one corps advancing south along the Adige River valley under Davidovich while Alvinczi led the main force from the east, with the intention of linking up and freeing the large garrison under Wurmser trapped at Mantua. A successful junction of these columns would have placed the French Army of Italy in a critically exposed position. Napoleon's flanking maneuver disrupted this coordination, defeating the main Austrian army and cutting off its line of retreat before the two columns could unite. The French victory preserved the siege of Mantua and denied the Austrians their strategic objective, keeping Wurmser's garrison isolated. With the Austrian relief effort broken, French control of northern Italy remained intact and the pressure on Mantua continued, a result with direct consequences for the broader campaign in the Italian theater.
