Battle of the Black River

Battle context

The Battle of the Black River formed part of the broader Anglo-Spanish contest for control of the Mosquito Shore during the American War of Independence. Spanish forces under Matías de Gálvez moved against the Black River settlement in April 1782, expelling the British garrison and most of the settlers. The engagement demonstrated Spain's ability to project force along the Central American coastline, but the victory proved difficult to consolidate: disease depleted the Spanish garrison left to hold the settlement. A British counterstroke in August, drawing on regrouped settlers and reinforcements from Jamaica, retook Black River. The outcome illustrated the recurring pattern on this peripheral theater, where logistical endurance and disease resistance shaped control as much as battlefield performance did.
