The Battle of the Barrier was fought at the narrow land crossing connecting the Macao Peninsula to Xiangshan Island, a chokepoint defined by a wall built across the isthmus in 1573 that marked the formal border of Macao. The engagement placed the First Opium War directly at the edge of Portuguese-administered Macao, bringing hostilities to one of the most geopolitically sensitive boundaries in the region. Qing forces numbering around 2,000 sustained between 100 and 120 casualties, indicating a substantive British action at this frontier even if the recorded outcome remains incomplete.
