The Battle of the Assunpink Creek, fought near Trenton, New Jersey on January 2, 1777, resulted in an American victory over British forces under Cornwallis. Washington's force of approximately 6,000 held against a British column of around 5,000, inflicting roughly 365 casualties while sustaining approximately 100. Coming days after Washington's crossing of the Delaware and the initial surprise at Trenton, the engagement sustained American momentum at a critical juncture of the Revolutionary War, denying Cornwallis the ability to reverse the gains of the preceding days and keeping Continental forces in the field as an effective fighting force.
