Battle context

The Battle of the Alamo was a 13-day siege in which Mexican forces under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna reclaimed the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar. The Texian garrison, commanded by William Travis alongside James Bowie and Davy Crockett, suffered total losses of approximately 180 killed against a Mexican force of some 2,000–2,100 troops, which itself sustained roughly 600 casualties. Despite the Mexican tactical victory, the engagement became a defining moment in the Texas Revolution. The scale of the losses on both sides and the duration of the resistance transformed the Alamo into a rallying symbol for the Texian independence cause, lending the broader revolutionary effort a political and moral charge that outlasted the battle itself.
