The Battle of Temesvár on 9 August 1849 was the decisive engagement of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, ending in an Austrian victory that effectively concluded the war in defeat for the Hungarian revolutionary forces. Hungarian forces under Lieutenant General Józef Bem, combined with siege corps under Major General Károly Vécsey, held a numerical advantage of roughly 55,000 against Haynau's 38,000 Austrian troops, but that edge was offset by Austrian superiority in artillery. The Austrian victory at Temesvár broke organized Hungarian military resistance and foreclosed any prospect of reversing the campaign's outcome, bringing the revolution to its final collapse.
