Battle context

The Battle of Tarqui, fought near Cuenca in what is today Ecuador, was the decisive engagement of the Gran Colombia–Peru War. Gran Colombian forces under Antonio José de Sucre defeated the Peruvian vanguard and compelled the remaining Peruvian forces to withdraw, ending Peru's offensive momentum in the contested border region. However, the victory came at a steep cost: Colombian cavalry suffered heavy losses repelling a Peruvian charge, degrading the striking capacity of Sucre's army. Those losses made sustained pursuit or further offensive operations impractical, producing a stabilization of the front rather than a decisive strategic exploitation. The battle thus resulted in a defensive rather than conclusive outcome for Gran Colombia — sufficient to halt the Peruvian advance but not to dictate terms on the battlefield. Negotiations rather than further fighting would determine the war's final settlement.
