Battle context

The Battle of Tarawa was fought as part of Operation Galvanic, the U.S. invasion of the Gilbert Islands, then a Japanese-occupied British colonial territory. Concentrated on the tiny island of Betio — just 118 hectares — the battle resulted in nearly 6,400 dead on both sides over four days. Against a Japanese garrison of roughly 2,600, a U.S. force of 35,000 suffered over 1,000 killed, a casualty rate that drew immediate attention to the costs of amphibious assault against fortified Pacific island positions. The engagement demonstrated that seizing small, heavily defended atolls would require substantial resources and produce severe losses even when the attacking force held overwhelming numerical superiority. As an early test of the Central Pacific drive, Tarawa provided operational and tactical lessons that shaped subsequent American amphibious planning across the island-hopping campaign.
