Battle context

The Battle of Tamai brought British forces under Gerald Graham into direct engagement with the Mahdist army commanded by Osman Digna. With a Mahdist force of approximately 10,000 facing a British contingent of 4,500, the scale of the confrontation reflected the intensity of the wider Mahdist War, which had been escalating since 1881. Mahdist casualties of around 2,000 represented a significant attrition of Osman Digna's forces in the region, though Digna remained an active commander throughout the conflict. The engagement was part of broader British efforts to stabilize the Sudan and counter the Mahdist movement's expansion during a critical period of the war.
