Battle context

The Battle of Tallushatchee was an early engagement of the Creek War in which United States forces under Brigadier General John Coffee inflicted a decisive defeat on the Red Sticks in the northeastern Mississippi Territory. With 186 Red Stick casualties recorded, the action demonstrated the capacity of American forces to strike Creek towns directly and dealt a significant blow to Red Stick fighting strength in the region. The engagement was part of the broader American campaign to suppress the Red Stick faction of the Creek Nation following the outbreak of hostilities in 1813.
