Overview

The Battle of Tali–Ihantala was part of the Finnish-Soviet Continuation War (1941–1944), which occurred during World War II. The battle was fought between Finnish forces—using war materiel provided by Germany—and Soviet forces. To date, it is the largest battle in the history of the Nordic countries.

Significance

The Battle of Tali-Ihantala was the largest battle in the history of the Nordic countries, fought between Finnish forces equipped with German war materiel and a Soviet force roughly three times their size. Taking place within the Continuation War of 1941-1944, the engagement represented a critical test of Finnish defensive capacity against Soviet offensive pressure. Finland committed approximately 50,000 troops against a Soviet force of around 150,000, and Finnish casualties of approximately 8,750 were sustained against estimated Soviet losses of 4,500-5,500. The battle's place in the Continuation War underscores the scale of Soviet operational effort directed at Finland in this period and the extent to which German material support shaped Finnish ability to resist.
