Overview

The Battle of Taginae or Battle of Busta Gallorum took place in July of 552 AD, where Byzantines led by Narses defeated the Ostrogoths (Goths) under King Totila. The Byzantine victory paved the way for the Byzantine reconquest of the Italian Peninsula and the dissolution of the Gothic Kingdom.

Significance

The Battle of Taginae, fought in July 552, was the decisive engagement of the Gothic War of 535–554. Byzantine forces under Narses defeated the Ostrogothic army of King Totila, with Ostrogothic casualties recorded at 6,000. The battle directly enabled the Byzantine reconquest of the Italian Peninsula, removing the primary obstacle to imperial control over the region. The defeat of Totila, who commanded the Ostrogothic Kingdom at its height of resistance, led to the dissolution of the Gothic Kingdom itself. Command passed to Teia following the battle, but the Ostrogothic position had been irreparably broken. The engagement thus stands as the turning point of a war that had lasted nearly two decades, concluding the principal phase of Emperor Justinian's effort to reclaim the western territories of the former Roman Empire.
