Battle context

The Second Battle of Szolnok, fought on 5 March 1849, was a Hungarian victory that drove Austrian forces from the city and inflicted significant casualties on the imperial brigades commanded by Karger and Ottinger. The engagement carried weight beyond its immediate tactical result: it provided a moral boost to the Hungarian revolutionary cause at a moment when Austrian confidence was running high. Field Marshal Windisch-Grätz had reported after the Battle of Kápolna, fought only days earlier on 26–27 February, that he had scattered and destroyed the Hungarian forces and expected to capture Debrecen, the seat of the revolutionary government, within days. The Hungarian success at Szolnok directly undercut that assessment and shook the overconfidence of the Austrian high command, signaling that the revolutionary army remained a coherent fighting force capable of offensive action.
