Battle context

The Battle of Suomussalmi, fought from 30 November 1939 to 8 January 1940, is considered the clearest and most significant Finnish victory in the northern half of Finland during the Winter War. A Finnish force of approximately 17,000 men defeated a Soviet force of roughly 48,000, inflicting nearly 13,000 casualties while sustaining around 2,700 of their own. The result demonstrated that Finnish forces could defeat numerically superior Soviet formations, and the engagement stands as the defining Finnish operational success of the northern theater in the Winter War.
